Redefining Adventure, One Pause at a Time
Every March, we recognize Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM) — a time dedicated to celebrating inclusion, amplifying voices, and promoting opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities to fully participate in community life.
But here at Plan~Pause~Go, awareness isn’t just about information.
It’s about possibility.
It’s about showing families that adventure is still within reach — even when the journey looks different.
What Is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month?
Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month began in 1987 to highlight the importance of inclusion and community integration for individuals with developmental disabilities.
Developmental disabilities:
- Begin before age 22
- Are lifelong
- Impact daily living activities
- May affect mobility, learning, communication, or behavior
Examples include:
- Autism spectrum disorder
- Down syndrome
- Cerebral palsy
- Intellectual disabilities
- Epilepsy
But here’s what statistics don’t tell you:
Behind every diagnosis is a dreamer.
An adventurer.
A family determined to live fully.
Awareness Is Important — But Access Is Powerful
Awareness says, “We see you.”
Accessibility says, “You belong here.”
True inclusion means:
- Theme parks with disability access services
- Cruise ships with accessible cabins
- Resorts with roll-in showers
- Staff trained in sensory sensitivity
- Spaces that welcome mobility devices without hesitation
When travel becomes accessible, something incredible happens.
Families stop surviving… and start experiencing.
Travel With Developmental Disabilities: It May Look Different
At Plan~Pause~Go, we believe in a different kind of adventure.
One that understands:
- Extra planning is often required
- Flexibility is essential
- Rest breaks matter
- Medical needs must be considered
- Caregivers carry invisible weight
Traveling with developmental disabilities isn’t always spontaneous.
It’s intentional.
It’s slower.
It’s strategic.
And it is still beautiful.
The Caregiver Perspective
Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is also about recognizing caregivers.
The planners.
The advocates.
The medication managers.
The sensory navigators.
The steady hands during hard moments.
Caregivers don’t just pack suitcases.
They pack backup plans.
They don’t just book vacations.
They research accessibility policies, medical access, dietary accommodations, and emergency options.
And they deserve adventure too.
Redefining What Adventure Means
Adventure doesn’t have to mean:
- Rope drop to park close
- Jam-packed itineraries
- High-energy nonstop activity
Sometimes adventure means:
- Watching fireworks from a quiet corner
- Sailing with one accessible stateroom
- Exploring one attraction instead of ten
- Taking breaks without guilt
Adventure can be slower.
Quieter.
Intentional.
And still extraordinary.
What We’re Celebrating This Month
This March, we celebrate:
đź’™ Inclusion over isolation
đź’™ Access over barriers
đź’™ Courage over comparison
đź’™ Families who choose to go anyway
We celebrate every pause that made the “go” possible.
A Message to Families Walking This Path
If you’re raising, caring for, or supporting someone with a developmental disability:
You are not behind.
You are not doing it wrong.
You are not asking for too much.
And you absolutely deserve joy-filled experiences together.
Travel may require more preparation.
But it is still possible.
And it is still worth it.
Let’s Redefine Adventure Together
Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month isn’t just about awareness.
It’s about action.
It’s about building a world where:
- Accessibility is standard
- Inclusion is normal
- Travel is attainable
At Plan~Pause~Go, we believe:
You can plan carefully.
You can pause when needed.
And you can still go.
Because adventure belongs to everyone.
